In the first episode the God-man was a random guest at someone else's party. He's one of us. Jesus is not 'above' being in a small town. He is not the center of attention. Jesus is accessible and willing to come to the aid of sinners for regular everyday things (not just spiritual problems). Jesus performs a quiet miracle that shows a few people (the servants, Mary, the disciples and probably the bridegroom) that a new age has arrived. He transforms the water of ceremonial cleansing into wine. The stone washing jars that Jesus commands to be filled with water are very significant to the story. John's gospel contains an interesting comparison / contrast between Jesus' reactions to events at two different celebrations. Chapter 2 has both episodes back to back with only a single sentence acting as a transition between the two. The Gospels, are works of literature as well as being historical accounts of Jesus' ministry; each being arranged with great deliberation by the human author (under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit) with a specific audience in mind. John gives his reason for writing in John 20:31
"But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name."
